WALL STREET JOURNAL: An Egyptian court Monday sentenced three journalists from the Qatar-based Al Jazeera English news network to between seven and 10 years in prison, on charges that they manipulated footage to tarnish Egypt’s image.
The journalists, two Egyptians and an Australian, have been detained since late December when police raided two hotel suites that they had been using as a makeshift news bureau. They were charged with a raft of crimes, including aiding a terrorist organization and broadcasting false news…
“There is no hope in the judicial system,” said Mr. Fahmy’s brother, Adel Said, immediately after the verdict was announced by a judge in a courtroom inside a massive prison complex. “We used to have hope.” … (more)
