Airlines add $10-$30 fees for peak travel days in summer

Airlines have quietly increased what you’ll pay for a flight nearly every day this summer by slapping a surcharge for flying on a “peak travel day,” an analysis of airfares shows.

The surcharge ranges from $10 to $30 for each one-way domestic flight and is included in the cost of a ticket, according to FareCompare.com, which analyzed airfare data on May 20 for USA TODAY.

For a family of four, the extra charges could add up to $240 to the cost of a round trip this summer vacation season. “The airlines are treating the entire summer season like a holiday,” says FareCompare.com CEO Rick Seaney…
