While living in Lancaster has a number of benefits – well, at least it is a good place to raise a family – there has always been a paucity of good restaurants unless you like shoofly pie…ugh. Hence the incredible popularity of The Olive Garden where a tasty but pedestrian meal can be had.
One exception which we frequently patronize for Indian cuisine is the Taj Mahal on Bennett Avenue just off the Rt. 30 / Rohrerstown Road interchange.
From our experience at our first visit earlier in the week, we would rate the Sa La Thai Restaurant and Noodle House at 337 N. Queen Street in the same class as the Taj Mahal.
We enjoyed the ample house salad with especially tasty ginger vinaigrette.
Our entree of Thai sweet basil stir fried with tofu, bell pepper, onion, carrot, broccoli, mushroom in chili sauce was a delicious. The same was said about the dish with chicken instead of tofu. Both came out attractively plated. (From our early career developing nursing homes, we learned that how attractive food is served is almost as important to older people as the taste. Now we know this from firsthand experience!)
Unlike the Taj Mahal, Sa La Tahi does not serve alcoholic beverages so the custom is to bring your own. There is a State Store handy a block away.
We have observed the popularity of the Taj Mahal, both for sit in and take out. From our visit, it seemed that the Sa La could use more patronage. We suggest you do so. It will be a welcome break.
If you have discovered other very good restaurants in the area, please let us know. We’ll be glad to check them out and, if we agree, write about them.
