5,600 High-risk patients get help from state

Pennsylvania is rolling out this month a first-ever state-run insurance plan to cover patients with pre-existing conditions, a stopgap measure before federal law requires private insurers to offer plans in 2014.

It’s a move advocates say is long overdue, a necessary step in helping the more than 1 million Pennsylvanians without health coverage. It’s also expensive, funded by a $160 million grant from Washington, D.C.

The catch? It can only cover 5,600 patients. In a state that reports say has more than 2 million residents in danger of being denied insurance because of a pre-existing illness, even the new program’s proponents say it’s little more than a drop in the bucket…
