50 miles evacuation radius

Japan is extending the evacuation zone to 20 miles around the nuclear plant and will not let people back to their homes.  The U.S. said early on it should have been a 50 mile radius.

Can you imagine an evacuation drill of 50 miles radius around nuclear plants in the U.S.?  For safety purposes, just to see how well people evacuated and left their homes, to go 51 miles from the site, just for two hours.  That would be the end of the Indian Head plant, which would require evacuations of densely populated areas in the New York City Metropolitan Area.  Try to imagine what that evacuation would look like.  It is a reasonable request by anti-nuclear activists and politicians to require an evacuation drill to test the system so it can be improved.
