Editorial “Lost in space” is sub-headed “With money tight, the roomy office setup for the Lancaster County Library System is no longer a good deal. Check out these suggestions.”
It concludes: “We think board President Veronica Urdaneta is correct that the system shouldn’t lock itself into another five-year lease with High without exploring whether other landlords might offer a better deal — even if it means the system is stuck where it is for another two years. The long-term cost could be lower.
“We also hope High might rethink its stand on releasing the system from its lease early. Maybe that’s not a smart business move, but it’s smart public relations — and good citizenship \h— at a time when libraries, like just about every other government-funded service, find themselves strapped for cash just as demand is rising.”…
WATCHDOG: A wag of the tail. The “System” was supposed to serve the libraries, along with other chores performing the work previous done in the basement of the Lancaster Public Library. By allowing each library one vote on matters and then playing the small libraries against the large ones, the System, that was supposed to be the servant, was finagled into becoming the master allowed to consume a disproportionate amount of funds.
