The smart move: Harrisburg schools must keep early education

The Harrisburg School District is continuing to prepare for the elimination of pre-K programs and kindergarten.

Nothing could be more contrary to the public’s wishes. Nothing could be more shortsighted.

While the school board has not made a final decision on cutting early childhood education, school staff recently received a letter from district operating officer Shawn Farr telling them to prepare for the cuts…

Ironically, cutting pre-K itself would not save the school district money. Its pre-K programs are paid for by a combination of federal, state and private grants that are specifically for early childhood education. That money would simply evaporate…
