Teacher/coach sex bill signed into law

Teachers and coaches who engage in sexual relationships with students will face more severe penalties under legislation signed into law on Tuesday.

The new law, supported by Montgomery County prosecutors and legislators, makes it a felony for any teacher or school employee, including counselors and coaches, to engage in sexual relations with any student under 18 or who is still attending high school.

“We send our children to school to gain an education. There is no place in the educational system for sexual relationships of any kind between teachers or coaches and their students. It violates the most fundamental trust we place in our schools and teachers,” said Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman, who was on hand for Gov.
