Rendell fights for sales tax overhaul

If a state sales tax could be expanded anywhere, Pennsylvania might be just the place.

Pennsylvania ranks among the 10 most fiscally stable states, according to a November study by the Pew Center on the States, and pollsters who see anti-tax sentiment nationwide said it’s not as strong here as it is elsewhere…

Gov. Ed Rendell has been traveling around the state, stumping for his plan, which would lower the state sales tax from 6 percent to 4 percent but expand what is taxed.

Rendell has tried, without much success, to make headway in an uphill battle to garner support from lawmakers — none of whom have championed the issue — as well as businesses and the public…
