Pennsylvania nets $2B less in ’09 tax revenue

The recession may be over, but Pennsylvania continues to feel the pain in tax collections.

The state brought in about $2 billion less last year than in 2008, according to Census data released Tuesday. And state officials said numbers are below expectations so far this year, too.

“I’m not bubbling over with optimism just yet,” said Robert Strauss, a professor of economic and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University. “I’d like to think the worst is behind us … but there’s still a lot of mixed news.”

While Pennsylvania’s overall revenue dropped 6.4 percent last year to $30 billion, the Census showed the state did better than the nationwide decline of 8.6 percent. State tax collections across the country were $67 billion lower last year than in 2008…

  1. A flat tax of 11% of ALL Americans would bring in more money to the government that they are bringing in today – but of course we would tick off a ton of liberals who now reside in their parents’ basements. But at this point if something is not done to reign in spending and taxes we will all be living there.
