After Supreme Court, Stevens looks back and forward

… Justice John Paul Stevens— the longtime leader of the court’s liberal wing — has retired, and new Justice Elena Kagan takes his place today. Yet Stevens is as willing to challenge the court’s conservatives in retirement as he was on the bench, while still showing affection for his former colleagues.

In a wide-ranging interview in his chambers, he criticized decisions of the court under Chief Justice John Roberts even as he declared his faith in the institution.

“In time, the court will straighten itself out,” Stevens, 90, said, seated at a small round wood table. “Judges change over time, as they do the work. And there are fine judges on the court right now, and in the long run, you can be sure that they’ll do a good job.”
