PSU, NCAA must explain

HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS EDITORIAL: The question of why Penn State University’s leadership agreed to arbitrary, unwarranted sanctions against the football program in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, which the National Collegiate Athletic Association had no authority to impose on its own, is an enduring mystery.

Penn State and the NCAA want to keep it that way, even though the answer is a significant matter of public interest not only to PSU alumni and football fans, but to Pennsylvania taxpayers. The sanctions include a $60 million fine, payable over five years to the NCAA, which plans to distribute the money nationally to organizations that work against child sexual abuse…

Penn State officials repeatedly have urged their critics to “move on,” without the benefit of an explanation for the leadership’s decisions. Transparency should not require judicial intervention. But Pennsylvanians are fortunate in this case to have Judge Covey providing it… (more)

EDITORIAL: It is gratifying to see newspapers now taking the position that NewsLanc proclaimed from the very outset. There was no legal basis or precedent for the NCAA intervention and actions. The governor and many trustees were desperate to prevent the investigation of the firing of Coach Joe Paterno or the earlier “slow walk” of Jerry Sandusky. By entering into a consent decree, disregarding cost to Penn State reputation, the future of the football program, and cost, the door was slammed on what otherwise would have led to a public airing of what took place.

  1. I’m glad the Harrisburg Patriot News is addressing this. They were in the forefront of reporting this whole mess from the beginning.

Unfortunately our local so-called newspaper was behind the eight-ball then, and remains behind things today.

LNP’s “new’ look is atrocious; the stories are nothing more than feel-good articles attempting to draw visitors to Lancaster County and hopefully book a room at the Marriott. There is very little ‘news’ being reported or investigated, and there is almost nothing from a state, national or world perspective.

Thank goodness we have NewsLanc to keep us better informed!!!!!
