NEW ERA EDITORIAL

“Cameras effective security measure” goes on to observe “Critics also say the group behind the [surveillance] cameras has no oversight—and that’s true. There are no state or federal laws governing the use of public cameras. Whether some form of oversight is needed is worthy discussing. Critics won’t say it, but there’s something about this innovative system that makes them nervous. This is to be expected with new technology.”

WATCHDOG: A wag of the tail. While embracing useful new technology, we must safeguard hard won liberties.

A place to start would be to invite representatives of the local ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) or its equivalent to participate in the Lancaster Community Safety Coalition, which sponsors the cameras. Also, whoever is Lancaster’s mayor should be an ex officio member of the managing board.

Furthermore, as pointed out in a recent Letter, improper police activities must also be reported.

"....I have never made it a consideration whether the subject was popular or unpopular, but whether it was right or wrong; for that which is right will become popular, and that which is wrong, though by mistake it may obtain the cry or fashion of the day, will soon lose the power of delusion, and sink into disesteem." Thomas Paine, Common Sense, on "Financing the War", March 5, 1782
