Most construction workers aren’t talking

A NewsLanc reporter took a stroll around Penn Square this week to chat with passing construction workers about the progress of the recently-delayed Convention Center project. The plan was to gather an impression of how the project is coming along from the “ground level,” so to speak. But few workers felt inclined to share any detailed information.

Some alluded to technical challenges and setbacks (like one glazer who mentioned a recent order for the installation of nearly 1,000 mirrors), while some implied that the process is running quite smoothly. A few of the workers mentioned that they are not at liberty to discuss the project, which may account for the terse replies offered by many others. Some actually plugged tomorrow night’s public Lancaster County Convention Center Authority meeting in lieu of providing any specific details.

This past weekend, NewsLanc published a Letter referencing comments that had been posted by the wife of a worker at the Convention Center. Regardless of whether that particular item prompted this silence among construction workers, it is clear that the project—along with its “myriad” setbacks—is being held in considerable confidence.

"....I have never made it a consideration whether the subject was popular or unpopular, but whether it was right or wrong; for that which is right will become popular, and that which is wrong, though by mistake it may obtain the cry or fashion of the day, will soon lose the power of delusion, and sink into disesteem."
