First Friday Highlights

By Cliff Lewis

On May’s First Friday, the heavy rains let up just in time for the sidewalks to fill with music, crafts, and a steady stream of gallery-hoppers. The warm weather had brought a notable increase in Downtown foot traffic. And, for the first time this year, street vendors set up outdoor tables to display their wares—from original paintings to custom designed clothing.

Music was a big part of the evening’s festivities. At the corner of Prince and Orange, a pair of bagpipes were blasting out the theme from Star Wars, along with some other pop cultural favorites. And over at the 300 block of N Queen, BUiLDiNG CHARACTER hosted the jazzy Faux Minx quartet, who recorded their first live album that very evening.

On a calmer note, the Fulton Opera House Clubhouse hosted the Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform in a minimalist presentation of five short plays, each written by a local playwright and read by local actors. The readings began at 9 p.m., while many of the galleries began to close, and the audience of tired art-walkers quietly listened to the series of thoughtful dialogues.

"....I have never made it a consideration whether the subject was popular or unpopular, but whether it was right or wrong; for that which is right will become popular, and that which is wrong, though by mistake it may obtain the cry or fashion of the day, will soon lose the power of delusion, and sink into disesteem." Thomas Paine, Common Sense, on "Financing the War", March 5, 1782
